The importance of consistency when it comes to making gym progress
One of the greatest tools for success with your gym progress is… consistency!
Getting the workouts done week in, week out, and sometimes even at a reduced effort, will yield far higher results than always striving for perfect sessions but at the cost of missing sessions when you’re not feeling 100%.
Too many of us get too hung up on the idea that every workout should be done at maximum effort, and if we haven’t got that in us, then we should leave training for another day.
But trust us when we say that a 6-out-of-10-effort workout is always worth it and will get you a step closer to achieving your long term goals! Consistency and frequency are the number one determinant of gym progress, so by turning up you’ve already won half the battle!
So, how can get better at staying consistent?
When it comes to getting your workouts ticked off each week, you need to create a routine, and the best way place to start is by writing out a weekly training and activity schedule. Don’t go crazy – 3 workouts a week along with an increase in your steps is ideal, but if all you can commit to right now is once or twice a week, then that’s always better than nothing!
Put the training days in your diary, with reminders, and try to commit to sticking to the plan for 4 weeks initially; it can help to tell someone your schedule so that there is a feeling of accountability.
As you enter week 3, start planning out your next 4 weeks and make any changes to your routine if necessary. Planning in 4 week blocks should allow for you to adjust your schedule ahead of holidays and work events so there’s no excuse near the time to fall off track.
By the time you’re approaching the end of your second 4-week phase, you should feel like you’re now in a sustainable routine and hopefully you’ve noticed the physical benefits from staying consistent. But even when your training has become habitual and you’re seeing measurable gym progress, don’t stop the forward planning; it will always be beneficial to think about what comes next and to plan for times of the year when you might be able to commit a little more, or try something new!
Remember, consistency is absolutely key to making gym progress and achieving your goals, so make a plan and commit to the process!
